Allegro
Down to earth design with a warm, friendly feel. Well presented entry.
Good ecological clarity.
Recycling furniture idea sound, although pine as a wood has a 70s feel
and is out of fashion in the kitchen
market. Oak would be more durable in the way it colours over time. Perhaps
the entry
could have discussed other reclaimed wood options.
A lot of thought and effort has gone into the materials that could be
used. It was felt that the kitchen design itself
could have been more inspiring and that perhaps there wasn’t much
storage space in the design as presented.
Also, shelves are sometimes an issue as they are difficult to keep clean.
Nonetheless, a very sound entry, well researched.

KitchenSide Out
Excellent idea for the family and for the social use of the kitchen. Good
social clarity
It was felt that, although it presented some practical challenges, the
focus of the main parts of the
kitchen in an island site was an interesting concept. Taking the preparation
areas, cooking
and seating away from the walls created space where everyone using the
kitchen
would be facing each other and able to interact.
It was felt that the recycling idea needed further development to ensure
that the areas for removal
of waste were easy to access and needed to be easy to keep clean.
This entry demonstrated a radically different approach to kitchen design,
sustaining
social interaction of this hub of the house.

ReHabit
Well thought out entry. ‘Heat exchanger’ (hot box?)column
idea was much liked.
The wormery idea is good, but it would need to go outside the kitchen.
Using the reed bed filter
system also excellent. Good research into materials e.g. Paperstone that
may have potential.
Some strong ecological ideas although it was felt they may not have made
the best use of the space.

The Curve of Efficiency
Another interesting idea and well presented, however it was felt the design
creates ‘dead’ zones for
cleaning and maintenance. The feel of the design was colder – a
kitchen for industry rather than the family.
Use of the heat exchanger unit was a good idea however the water re-use
ideas seemed
rather complex to put into operation.

Corona
Great ideas both for the backlit doors and the Klamp system, but had not
entirely filled the design brief.
The interlocking framework idea is not new, but nevertheless interesting.
Layers kitchen
Very well presented entry and interesting design concept
but it was thought not to be very practical in reality.

Kitchen for the Future
Interesting use of shapes and seamless materials. Creates deep corners
which might be difficult to reach e.g. to clean.
The suggested curved surfaces from floor level would, in practice, be
very expensive to produce.
The idea of using thermal materials to show energy use was interesting
but the judges were unsure of its benefit in practical use.
On the other hand, the boot rack for storing muddy shoes was a good idea.
Interesting sink/dishwasher idea although that would make the dishwasher
very low,
which is ergonomically not an advantage.

Eco Kitchen
This design was particularly appreciated for the move-ability of worktops
and
units. It was thought that this could be an excellent development for
disabled users.
There was concern expressed about the limited storage space provided
by the design. It was felt that,
while interesting, the entry was not so exciting as some of the others
and that some of its ideas conflicted.

Non-sighted kitchen
Extremely original presentation, although it took time access the
points being made. Excellent thought given to
issues for non-sighted kitchen user, however it was felt that the entry
did not really fulfil the brief for the competition.
Nevertheless, it was felt worthy of an Honourable mention for its originality.
